<p>The RAM Colloquium is a forum for discussing the latest research in the field of geographic information science and adjoining fields. Invited speakers will report on their recent and ongoing work and provide an outlook on major lines and challenges ahead

<p><b>Abstract:</b></p>
<p>There are many aspects of good geovisualisation, such as deciding the type of visualisation, collecting and processing the data, and doing the graphic design. Quite often one runs into layout "puzzles" – perhaps the most well-known one being label placement.
Rather than solving such puzzles by hand, mathematical optimisation is an effective paradigm for improving visualisations by forcing us to formally define objectives and then providing efficient methods to optimise them. In this talk I will briefly introduce
this field of study and then illustrate it with our recent work on "optimal" drawings of geophylogenies (a visualisation used in biology).</p>
<p><b>Speaker bio:</b></p>
<p>Thomas C. van Dijk is Juniorprofessor of Eco-Informatics at the Ruhr-University Bochum. Prior to that, he received his PhD from Utrecht University's department of Information and Computing Sciences and was principal investigator on a number of projects at
the Chair for Algorithms and Complexity in Würzburg. His research considers both the theoretical and practical aspects of algorithms and often involves geographic information.</p>
