2nd International Conference of Music and Artificial Intelligence

                        ICMAI'02

                        12-15 September 2002, Edinburgh, Scotland

The 2002 International Conference on Music and Artificial Intelligence
(ICMAI'02) will be held on 12-15 September 2002, at the historic
St.Cecilia's Hall, in the Old Town, Edinburgh, Scotland. We encourage
contributions that investigate the interplay between musical theory and
practice with techniques and methods from artificial intelligence,
including computational cognitive modelling of musical processes.
We are especially interested in issues of musical representations and
analysis, associated algorithms, and the evaluation of musical
artefacts.

The organising committee welcomes submissions on all aspects of music and
artificial intelligence. There will be the following, non-exclusive themes:

1. Representation, Analysis and Pattern Discovery.

2. Situated Musical Cognition, Embodied Musical Perception.

3. Creativity in Musical Composition and Performance.

The conference is organised jointly by the Faculty of Music and the
Division of Informatics, University of Edinburgh.

The conference will consist of paper sessions, posters, round table
discussions, concerts and various social events, including a Ceilidh.

SUBMISSIONS

Submissions are invited in the following categories:

     Category A: Full research paper

     Category B: Informal progress report


Submissions under category A will be fully refereed, and authors of
accepted papers are expected to present their work at the conference.
Papers in category A are going to be published as a special issue of
the Lecture Notes in Computer Science - Artificial Intelligence
(LNCS/LNAI) Series by Springer, which will be available at the
conference.

Submissions under category B will also be formally refereed, but those
submissions accepted will be published in an on-line technical report.
The printed version, available at the conference, will include either
the abstract of the original technical report, or a more extended
version up to 1000 words, according to the authors' choice. Authors of
accepted papers of Category B are expected to present a brief outline
of their work at the conference and to prepare a poster for display at
the conference venue. Unless otherwise requested, submissions rejected
under category A will also be considered for inclusion under category
B.

Submitted papers of both Category A and Category B must describe work
not previously published, and must not be submitted concurrently to a
journal or to another conference. The reviewing process will be
strictly anonymous.


Papers of both Category A and Category B should be no more than 12
pages maximum in length, including an abstract of 70-150 words.
Authors must follow the instructions and format specifications of the
Springer LNCS/LNAI Series, and use the appropriate templates and style
files provided (for more information, see the conference web
page). Authors are strongly encouraged to use LaTeX2e, although Word
files will also be accepted. Papers not following the Springer
specifications will not be accepted, unless a special permission has
been obtained before submission by the organising committee.

Electronic submission will start during the following days. The
conference web page should be consulted regularly for further details.
