Editorial 

Seit nun 25 Jahren forscht das Institut für interdisziplinäre Konflikt- und Gewaltforschung (IKG) an der Universität Bielefeld den Ursachen, Formen und Konsequenzen gesellschaftlicher Konflikte und der Frage, wann in Konflikten Gewalt auftritt oder Konflikte zu Gewalt führen. Das IKG ist eine zentrale wissenschaftliche Einrichtung der Universität und forscht vor allem in Drittmittelprojekten, die von unterschiedlichen Förderungen getragen werden (DFG, BMBF, BMFSFJ, Volkswagen Stiftung, Stiftung Mercator und anderen nationalen und internationalen Fördereinrichtungen. Die Forschung ist interdisziplinär wie empirisch. Wir organisieren die gemeinsame Forschung und die Diskussion der Ergebnisse in einem Forschungsraum, den wir gerne als Tetraeder vorstellen. Er ist definiert durch die Fokusthemen Radikalisierung und De-radikalisierung, Diskriminierung und Gewalt, Integration und Marginalisierung, Migration, Raum und sozialer Wandel:

Fragen der Integrations- und Migrationsforschung werden seit Beginn aus der Perspektive der Konfliktforschung untersucht und das liegt nahe. Integrations- wie Migrationsprozesse erzeugen Konflikte in Gesellschaften und sie können befördert werden, wenn Gesellschaften die Konflikte konstruktiv regulieren. Immer wieder jedoch wird Migration von destruktiven Konflikten begleitet. Im Kontext der Immigration entwickeln sich Stereotype, Vorurteile und menschenfeindliche Herabwürdigungen von Neuankommenden in einer Gesellschaft. Radikale Gruppen greifen das Thema Migration auf, um andere zu radikalisieren, oder Macht auszuüben wie vermeintliche Vorrechte einzuklagen und zu erhalten. Immer wieder kommt es zu destruktiven Konflikten in lokalen Räumen zwischen so genannten Einheimischen und eingewanderten Gruppen. Es kommt zu Separationsprozessen wie Radikalisierungen innerhalb von Gruppen. Soziale Vorurteile, Diskriminierungen und Gewalt beeinflussen Prozesse der Integration, die wir auch als Akkulturationsprozesse verstehen, also Prozesse der Aushandlung und der Veränderungen von sozialen Lebenswelten. Migration und Integration führen zu Veränderungen und das geht kaum ohne Konflikte in Gesellschaften, die sich durch Konflikte wandeln. Dies gilt aktuell in modernen und offenen Gesellschaften, die die Balance zwischen nationaler Schließung und kultureller, sozialer und wirtschaftlicher Öffnung suchen, umso mehr. Dementsprechend ist es für das IKG als Gründungsmitglied des DeZIM folgerichtig, ein Bestandteil der Forschungsgemeinschaft zu sein.

Die Konfliktforschung des IKG kann hoffentlich mit seiner „Konfliktsicht“ zum Verständnis von hemmenden wie förderlichen Prozessen der Immigration und Integration beitragen. Es hat dazu vor allem Langzeitstudien angelegt, wie die Studie Zugehörigkeit und Gleichwertigkeit (ZuGleich), die seit 2014 die Akkulturationsorientierungen in der Bevölkerung untersucht. Menschenfeindlichkeiten und radikale Ablehnungen von Vielfalt werden seit 19 Jahren in der Langzeitstudie Gruppenbezogene Menschenfeindlichkeit, die seit 2016 als Mitte-Studien fortgeführt werden, untersucht. Im Projekt Missachtung von Minderheiten in Europa (MisMiE) untersuchten wir, wie Muslim*innen und Roma mit Abgrenzungen und Diskriminierungen umgehen. Das Projekt Neuaushandlungen lokaler Ordnungen, welches in der DeZIM-FG gefördert wird, gibt uns die Möglichkeit, komparativ Konflikte in Stadteilen in Ost- und Westdeutschland, also Räumen unterschiedlicher Migrationsgeschichte, zu untersuchen.

In vielen anderen Projekten, Promotionen, Masterarbeiten versuchen wir multimethodisch, qualitativ wie quantitativ Migrations- und Integrationskonflikte und ihren Einfluss auf den Wandel von Gesellschaft nachzuvollziehen. Das verbindet das IKG mit den anderen Forschungen der DeZIM-FG. Es ist eine Expertise, die mit der Expertise der anderen Forschungseinrichtungen der Forschungsgemeinschaft innovative Wege der Migrations- und Integrationsforschung gehen kann.

For 25 years now, the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research on Conflict and Violence (IKG) at the Universität Bielefeld has been researching causes, forms, and consequences of social conflicts. Including the question of how violence occurs in conflicts or how conflict leads to violence. The IKG is a central scientific institution of the university and conducts research primarily in third-party funded projects that are supported by various grants (DFG, BMBF, BMFSFJ, Volkswagen Foundation, Stiftung Mercator and other national and international funding institutions. The institute comprises an interdisciplinary and empirical joint research. It offers room for discourse concerning results in a research area that we would like to present as a tetrahedron. It is defined by a focus on radicalization and de-radicalization, discrimination and violence, integration and marginalization, migration, territory, and social change. 

Questions of integration and migration research have been examined from perspectives of conflict research since the early stages. It goes without saying that integration and migration processes create conflicts in societies but can be solved, if societies regulate conflicts constructively. Still, migration is also accompanied by destructive conflicts. Within the context of migration, stereotypes, prejudices, and misanthropic degradation of newcomers are constantly developed. Radical groups take up the subject-matter of migration in order to radicalize others or to exercise power such as claiming and maintaining supposed privileges. There are constantly destructive conflicts in local areas between so-called locals and migrant groups. With separation and radicalization processes even within groups. Prejudice, discrimination, and violence influence processes of integration which we also understand as acculturation processes i.e., processes of negotiation and change within social environments. Migration and integration will ultimately lead to change that can hardly be undergone without societal conflicts. Which is even more true in modern and open societies that seek to balance between national closure and cultural, social, and economic dissemination. Hence, it is just consequential for the IKG Institute, as a founding member of the DeZIM, to be part of this research community.

Hopefully, the conflict research of the IKG can contribute to the understanding of obstructive and beneficial processes of migration and integration. To this end, the institute has mainly set up long-term studies such as the study on belonging and equivalence (ZuGleich). Which has been investigating acculturation orientation within the population since 2014. For 19 years, misanthropy and radical rejection of diversity have been investigated with the long-term study of group-related misanthropy, which has been continued as the “Mitte-Studien” as of 2016. During the research on defiance of minorities in Europe (MisMiE), we examined how Muslims and Roma people deal with differentiation and discrimination. With the project “Neuausrichtungen lokaler Ordnungen” which is funded by the DeZIM-FG, we have the opportunity to investigate comparative conflicts in cities of eastern- and western Germany.

Comprising other projects, doctorates, Master’s thesis, and through multi-method as well as qualitative and quantitative research methods, we try to understand, follow, and deconstruct conflicts of migration and integration. Including its effects on societies in general. Which complements the IKG with the aspects of research within the DeZIM research community. It is this joint expertise of research by these member institutes in order to pursue innovative paths of migration and integration research.

Die DeZIM-Workshop-Series dient der Förderung und Vernetzung von Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen der DeZIM-Forschungsgemeinschaft (DeZIM-FG) und des DeZIM-Instituts (DeZIM-I). Sie stärkt gezielt und bedarfsorientiert die wissenschaftlichen Profile von Wissenschaftler*innen auf Master-, Promotions- und Post-Doc-Ebene. Zugleich fördert sie den Ausbau eines institutsübergreifenden Netzwerks junger Forscher*innen, die sich als Teil der DeZIM Gemeinschaft verstehen. 

Zu den Workshops werden erfahrene Referent*innen eingeladen, die Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen inhaltlich oder methodisch zu ausgewählten Aspekten der Integrations- und Migrationsforschung sowie der Rassismus- und Diskriminierungsforschung weiterbilden. Dies schließt die Behandlung fachübergreifender karrierefördernder Schwerpunkte (z.B. Rhetorik, Selbstpräsentation, Karriereplanung, Empowerment) mit ein. The DeZIM-Workshop-Series aims to promote and connect young scientists of the DeZIM research community (DeZIM-FG) and the DeZIM-Institute. The workshops have two main objectives: first, to strengthen the scientific profile of young researchers at the post-graduate, doctoral, and post-doctoral level. Second, to expand the cross-institutional network of young scholars and scientists who are part of the DeZIM research community. 

The Series funds the invitation of experts in order to train young researchers on topics of integration and migration research as well as aspects of racism and discrimination research. Workshops will cover both methodological and thematic aspects, and/or career promotion (i.e., rhetoric, self-presentation, career planning, and empowerment). The workshops will be held in English or German.

Projekte/Projects 

Neuaushandlung lokaler Ordnungen: Migrationsinduzierte Vielfalt, Intergruppenbeziehungen, Konflikte und Integrationsdynamiken im Stadtteil 

In der beforschten ostdeutschen Stadt Magdeburg ergeben sich zwei neue inhaltliche Schwerpunkte. Zum einen haben sich die Projektmitarbeitenden entschieden neben den beiden Stadtteilen „Kannenstieg“ (Großwohnsiedlung im Norden Magdeburgs mit starken Zuzug von Geflüchteten seit 2015/16) und „Nordwest“ (zentral gelegene Einfamilienhaussiedlung mit sehr geringen Migrationsanteil) durch einen dritten Stadtteil auszuweiten. Die Forschung findet nun zusätzlich in dem Stadtteil „Altstadt“ statt. Dies ist ein urbaner und zentraler Stadtteil, der ebenfalls seit 2015 ein stark wachsenden Anteil an Menschen mit Migrationsgeschichte zu verzeichnen hat. Zum zweiten wird eine Kurzstudie zum sozialen Raum der Straßenbahn erstellt. Wir werden die Figurationen um die Verhandlung des öffentlichen Raums anhand von Straßenbahnfahrten untersuchen und diese Ergebnisse auch mit Erhebungen in Bonn und Dortmund vergleichen.

Renegotiation of local orders: migration-induced diversity, intergroup relationships, conflicts and integration dynamics in urban neighbourhoods 

Within the project, the research around the East German city of Magdeburg has two new thematic priorities. On the one hand, the project team decided to expand the two districts "Kannenstieg" (large housing estate in the north of Magdeburg with a strong influx of refugees since 2015/16) and "Nordwest" (centrally located single-family housing estate with a very low migration rate) by a third district. The research is now also taking place in the “Old Town” district. This is an urban and central district, which has also seen a rapidly growing proportion of people with a migration history since 2015. Second, a short study on the social space of the tram will be carried out. We will examine the figurations around the negotiation of public space on the basis of tram rides and compare these results with surveys in Bonn and Dortmund.

Gesellschaftliche Konflikte und Dynamiken des Parteienwettbewerbs in der Migrations- und Integrationspolitik (MigRep) 

Im Kooperationsprojekt MigRep wurde eine auf die Ziele des Projekts zugeschnittene repräsentative Bevölkerungsbefragung entwickelt, die Anfang April in die Feldphase startete. Zentrale Ergebnisse qualitativer Auswertungen der im Januar durchgeführten Fokusgruppen wurden dabei in die Umfrage integriert. Ziel ist es, zu analysieren, inwiefern die Wahrnehmung einer (un-)zufriedenstellenden (inhaltlichen) Vertretung Auswirkungen auf die Unterstützung der Demokratie in Deutschland hat. Die Stichprobe lässt ferner die Untersuchung von Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschieden zwischen Befragten mit und ohne formalen Migrationshintergrund zu und wird auf Deutsch, Türkisch, Russisch sowie Italienisch durchgeführt.

Research Project "Social Conflicts and Dynamics of Party Competition in Times of Migration and Integration" (MigRep) 

Within the collaborative Project MigRep, a representative survey specific to the projects’ objectives was prepared and entered the field phase in beginning of April. Core results of qualitative evaluations of the focus groups conducted in January, were integrated into the survey. The aim is to analyse to what extent the perception of (in)adequate (substantive) representation has an impact on support for democracy in Germany. The sample also allows for the investigation of similarities and differences between respondents with and without a formal migration background and is conducted in German, Turkish, Russian, and Italian.

Verbundprojekt TRANSMIT - Migrations- und Integrationsprozesse aus einer transnationalen Perspektive 

Die quantitative Migrationsstudie des TRANSMIT-Teams mit Schwerpunkt Westafrika ist nach erfolgreicher Pilotphase am 27. April ins den nigerianischen Staaten Edo und Kaduna ins Feld gegangen. Die repräsentative Studie stellt die erste Welle einer Panelbefragung dar, die deskriptive und befragungs-experimentelle Daten zu den Wechselwirkungen von Migrationsprozessen und kulturellen Faktoren, religiöser Diversität, regionalen Konflikten und organisierter Kriminalität vereint. In Deutschland forscht Julia Stier in Kollaboration mit dem TRANSMIT Team des IMIS zu senegalesischen und gambischen Migrant*innenorganisationen.

Researching migration and integration processes from a transnational perspective 

TRANSMIT’s quantitative migration study with a focus on West Africa has entered its field phase on April 27 after a successful pilot. The survey will be representative of the Nigerian states Edo and Kaduna and will be the first wave of a panel. It compiles both descriptive and survey-experimental data at the intersection of migration processes and cultural factors, religious diversity, regional conflicts and organised crime. In Germany, Julia Stier researches Senegalese and Gambian migrant organisations in close collaboration with IMIS’ TRANSMIT team.

How can women* and LBGTIQ* with refugee experience be protected? 

A brochure of the IMIS joint project "Welcome Culture and Democracy in Germany" (in German) portrays six projects to support women* and LBGTIQ* with refugee experience, who often experience multiple forms of violence. It is the result of BMBF-funded research in several German cities on protection against violence in the context of (forced) migration.

Superdiverse Stadtgesellschaft in Süddeutschland untersucht 

14 Monate lang hat das IMIS-Forschungsprojekt „Integration und Vielfalt in Sindelfingen“ die Rahmenbedingungen und Entwicklungsperspektiven der kommunalen Integrationsarbeit in der süddeutschen Stadt untersucht, in der mehr als die Hälfte der Bewohner familiäre Migrationserfahrung hat. Die Ergebnisse mündeten in das „Sindelfinger Konzept für Vielfalt, Dialog und Teilhabe“. Nun liegt der Forschungsbericht vor.

Study on superdiverse urban societies in southern Germany 

For 14 months, the IMIS research project "Integration and Diversity in Sindelfingen" investigated the conditions and development perspectives of municipal integration work in the southern German city, where more than half of the inhabitants have family migration experience. The results led to the "Sindelfingen Concept for Diversity, Dialogue and Participation”. The research report is now available (in German).

Research seminar "Frontiers in Quantitative Migrations Research"

Wir freuen uns das interdisziplinäre Forschungsseminar “Frontiers in Quantitative Migration Research ankündigen zu können. Es wird gemeinsam vom BIM und der Hertie School in Berlin organisiert. Wir bringen dort internationale Kolleg*innen aus den Bereichen Ökonomie, Soziologie, Demographie und verwandten Disziplinen zusammen, um innovative Forschung zu den Themen Migration und Integration zu präsentieren und zu diskutieren. 

Das wöchentliche Seminar findet donnerstags (auf Englisch) um 12 Uhr statt. Die Vorträge sind für ca. 30 Minuten geplant und es gibt anschließend Zeit für Diskussionen aus dem Publikum.

Abschlussbericht zum Forschungsprojekt "Radikalisierungsverläufe im Kontext von Anti-Asyl-Agitation" veröffentlicht 

Im Rahmen des Kabinettsausschusses zur Bekämpfung des Rechtsextremismus und Rassismus ist nun der Abschlussbericht der Studie zum Zusammenhang von Anti-Asyl-Agitation und Radikalisierung bei Menschen, die nicht einfach der organisierten extremistischen Rechten zuzuordnen sind, veröffentlicht worden. Das Forschungsprojekt ist eine gemeinsame Arbeit des IKG (Bielefeld) und des KomRex (Jena).

Final report on the research project "Radicalization processes in the context of anti-asylum agitation" published 

As part of the cabinet committee to combat right-wing extremism and racism, the final report of the study on the connection between anti-asylum agitation and radicalization among people who cannot simply be assigned to the organized extremist right, has now been published. The research project is a joint effort by the IKG (Bielefeld) and KomRex (Jena).

Multidimensionaler Erinnerunsgsmonitor - MEMO 

Mit „MEMO Deutschland – Multidimensionaler Erinnerungsmonitor“ erforscht das Institut für interdisziplinäre Konflikt- und Gewaltforschung Bielefeld (IKG), was, wie und wozu Bürger*innen in Deutschland historisch erinnern. Das Ziel ist die empirische Dokumentation der in Deutschland vorherrschenden Erinnerungskultur, erfasst in Form einer repräsentativen Meinungsumfrage im Bevölkerungsquerschnitt.

With "MEMO Germany - Multidimensional Remembrance Monitor", the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research on Conflict and Violence Bielefeld (IKG) is researching what, how, and why citizens in Germany remember historically. The aim is the empirical documentation of a prevailing culture of remembrance in Germany, recorded in the form of a representative opinion poll in the cross-section of the population.
