Institute will take place.
Our guest will be Lily Hu <https://scholar.harvard.edu/lilyhu/home> , a PhD
candidate in Applied Mathematics and Philosophy at Harvard University. She
works in philosophy of (social) science and political and social philosophy.
She holds an A.B. in Mathematics from Harvard College and taught English and
Spanish history in Madrid on a Fulbright Fellowship. She has worked on
topics in machine learning theory and algorithmic fairness. Her current work
is supported by a fellowship from the Jain Family Institute.
Input & discussion:
Causal Effects of Race
Lily Hu (Harvard University)
In this talk, I will discuss the relationship between quantitative methods
towards unearthing causal effects of salient social categories and our
normative thinking about social inequality. Causal inference and theorizing
about causation more broadly encompasses a wide set of methods, with
practitioners specializing in a variety of disciplines: across the social
sciences in e.g., economics, sociology, political science, in the health
sciences, notably in epidemiology and biostatistics, and in philosophy. I
argue that theorizing about how categories like race fit into causal
structure of the social world requires substantive normative theorizing
about race, racial discrimination, and racial injustice more broadly. This
entanglement of causal and ethical theorizing casts doubt on the viability
of causal analyses of social categories, and by extension causal inference
methods, as fruitful theoretical and practical tools for guarding against
discrimination.
