Dear all,
I hope you are well, and apologies for cross-posting.
With this email, I would like to announce that Prof. Ranabir Samaddar is
coming to the Netherlands for a short research visit at Radboud University
(19-23 December, 2021). Prof. Samaddar is Distinguished Chair in Migration
and Forced Migration Studies (see:
<http://www.mcrg.ac.in/Distinguished_Chair.asp>
http://www.mcrg.ac.in/Distinguished_Chair.asp) and a key/critical expert in
the field of conflict and migration studies. His most recent book The
Postcolonial Age of Migration moves beyond the dominant
migration-integration-social cohesion stalemate in migration scholarship
(see Caglars commentary:
<https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10624-021-09619-4>
https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10624-021-09619-4). Besides that,
he worked intensively on conflict and nationalism. His published work
includes, among many others, Emergence of the Political Subject (2009) and
The Marginal Nation: Transborder Migration from Bangladesh to West Bengal
(1999).
In the context of his visit, GLOCAL research group (together with
Transmobilities Network and Nijmegen Centre for Border Research) will
organize the following two events:
1. Public GLOCAL lecture: Re-reading the Age of Migration
Monday 20 December, 15:30-17:15, Linnaeus Building, Room: Lin4 (address:
Heyendaalseweg 137)
2. Intensive Research Seminar: What is the critical in postcolonial
approaches to migration, mobility and borders?
Wednesday 22 December, 10h00 14h30. We particularly welcome PhD
researchers and post-docs. Location will be communicated with participants.
Please see below for further information for those who would like to
participate.
Evidently, these events only take place on campus when Covid conditions
allow us.
The visit of Samaddar is funded by the GLOCAL research group and Geography,
Planning & Environment department of Radboud University.
Best wishes,
Joris

GLOCAL-TRANSMOBILITIES-NCBR SEMINAR
What is the critical in postcolonial approaches to migration, mobility and
borders?
With Prof. Ranabir Samaddar
22-12-2022
10h00 14h30
The Glocal research group at Radboud University, Nijmegen Centre for Border
Research and the transmobilities network are organizing an intensive
research seminar with Prof. Ranabir Samaddar, head of the Calcutta Research
Group and author of influential books like The Poscolonial Age of Migration
(2020) and Emergence of the Political Subject (2009). The objective of this
seminar is to openly discuss the critical elements of postcolonial
approaches in studies on migration, mobility and borders. This is
particularly needed, so we feel, since the terms postcolonial or
decolonial have almost turned into fashionable and common adjectives in
contemporary research frameworks. Can we re-articulate the critical in
postcolonial approaches? For whom is this important? How to do justice to
postcolonial perspectives in the actual doings of research? And what
blindspots might then emerge?
After a brief Introduction by Prof. Samaddar, we will invite several
upcoming/early career scholars (PhD researchers, Post Docs, independent
researchers, Master students) to present their work. From these insights we
create open discussions and conversations that stimulate mutual learnings
across different positions. Because of the interactive character of this
seminar, there are only a limited number of places available
How to participate?
Please send an email to joris.schapendonk at ru.nl
<mailto:joris.schapendonk at ru.nl> before 18th of November. Provide a
synopsis of your research project or interest (250 words) and indicate
whether you would like to present your work during this event.
Where?
If Covid conditions allow us, this event will be planned on campus of the
Radboud University, Nijmegen. The exact location will be communicated to all
participants a few days before the event.
When?
Wednesday 22 December 2021, 10h00 - 14h30
