! PhD Positions in Big Science Data
!
Come join the world leading Array Databases research team & makers of the
Big Science Data standards, and shape the future of Big Data in science and
engineering!
The Large-Scale Scientific Information Systems (L-SIS) research group [1] is
seeking excellent graduate students interested in pursuing a PhD in Computer
Science in the area of Array Databases. A partial industry occupation is an
extra option.
Positions are fully funded through EU project EarthServer-2, the follow-up to
EarthServer which, according to European Commission and reviewers, "With no
doubt the project has been shaping the Big Earth Data landscape through the
standardization activities within OGC, ISO and beyond“. The underlying
world-leading array database, rasdaman, will “significantly transform the way
that scientists in different areas of Earth Science will be able to access and
use data in a way that hitherto was not possible“.
We are collaborating worldwide (such as with NASA and ESA, the European Space
Agency) and have a strong reputation in:
- Array Databases [2], a database research area pioneered by our rasdaman system
[3], which is the currently most advanced and operationally used Big Array Data
Analytics system (230+ TB); manifold awards, such as 2014 winner of the T-Systems
Big Data challenge, underline this lead;
- standardization of Big Geo Data services [4];
- shaping the array query extension to the ISO SQL standard, SQL/MDA
("Multi-Dimensional Arrays").
You bring along: strong background in computer science, in particular in
Web/databases; substantial programming skills; engagement, endurance, and
interest in research; last but not least, fluent English reading and writing skills.
Interested candidates should contact Peter BAUMANN (p.baumann followed by
jacobs-university.de) by emailing a motivation letter, CV, transcript copies,
and at least one reference.
Jacobs University Bremen is an international research university located in the
North of Germany, close to the sea. In an all-english environment students from
100+ nations experience an optimal teacher/student ratio of about 1:10. Not the
least, there is a vibrant social life with manifold student clubs and activities
on and off campus. Jacobs University has been termed "elite university" by the
New York Times. The Computer Science Department has been ranked top by
karriere.de and CHE.
