Abstract:
While the adoption of digital banking increases at very fast pace, the physical points of access to banking services disappear even faster. As there is no common policy, regulator, or method for measuring access to banking there is a risk that some communities remain without access to these essential services. The financial exclusion due to geographical barriers is a relatively new problem in the Western world. In this talk, Andra Sonea will present her recent research on measuring access to basic banking services through the post office network in Wales, and generally to banking across the UK. It is shown that some regions are systematically unbanked and that the official access criteria are largely unmet in Wales.
