News and updates
Dear GeoIT.org event participant Roland Wagner,
as already anounced we are some news, updates and a call for you.
In Honor
We appreciate president emeritus Prof. Dr. Klaus Greve’s initiative for the foundation of our society on the occasion of his <https://geoit.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=90605b4f0f2ed7aa46a3527b9&id=087770ca09&e=4c093b679e> retirement from the University of Bonn this year. He was mainly accountable for the “Bonn declaration on Geoinformatics” in the year 2005 and was one of the key founders of the GfGI where he served as the first president. In the year 2016 the society expanded to our current name Society for Geoinformatics, GeoIT and Navigation e.V. ( GeoIT.org).
We celebrated Prof. Dr. Klaus Greve (picture below, middle) on the famous GI Salzburg (before AGIT) evening and recalled old times e.g with the former hot topic “Spatial Data Infrastrukture”, the global OGC, the influential regional GDI.NRW initiative and his startup <https://geoit.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=90605b4f0f2ed7aa46a3527b9&id=f98bffdb20&e=4c093b679e> lat/lon GmbH with <https://geoit.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=90605b4f0f2ed7aa46a3527b9&id=dd6ef3a30d&e=4c093b679e> deegree together with our current vice president Prof. Dr. Thomas Blaschke (left) and president Prof. Dr. Roland Wagner (right).

10th GeoIT Wherecamp 2023 – Call for Participation (open 3rd Nov.)
Event venue: Berlin, 30th November 2023
The GeoIT Wherecamp is a premier meetup with Barcamp focusing on the latest GeoIT research insights around GeoIoT, Lidar, GNSS, digital mapping, (autonomous) mobility and spatial intelligence of the GeoIT domain including industry and academic institutions.
This year we will once again be joined by industry leaders, subject matter experts and map enthusiasts who will share their vision and exchange ideas. Autonomous navigation is often considered as the key innovation of the enduring 21st century. It is a major long-term development with the potential of a new Kondratiev-Cycle for 50 years. AI is the other big topic – how will this go together?
In the years ahead, how will consumer expectations and business needs continue to evolve? What challenges will the GeoIT industry need to overcome? How will spatial data, algorithms, interactive maps and location sensors need to adapt? Which new hardware will be required? In which way will indoor positioning sensors, IoT, autonomous cars and drones evolve?
To help answer many of these questions we are looking for speakers from the following fields in Geoinformatics, GeoIT and Navigation:
* Autonomous navigation
* SLAM
* Robotics and ROS
* Indoor and Smart home
* Augmented reality
* GeoIoT
* GeoAI
* Wearable technologies
* UWB positioning
* Lidar
* GNSS/dGPS/DualGPS
* GPS-aided inertial navigation
* Inertial odometry
* Spatial business intelligence
* Delivery patterns, prices and utilization rates
* Logistics & asset tracking
Venue:
* Beuth Hall, BHT-Berlin University,
Luxemburger Straße 10, 13353 Berlin, Germany

Autonomous Navigation
is an exciting new term, a bit similar to autonomous systems and very similar to navigation & maps. After working for many years with the Baidu <https://geoit.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=90605b4f0f2ed7aa46a3527b9&id=f02a1fee91&e=4c093b679e> Apollo.auto open source software ( <https://geoit.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=90605b4f0f2ed7aa46a3527b9&id=86f29f7562&e=4c093b679e> Apollo @ Github) for autonomous navigation, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Roland Wagner could re-visit his well-known city Beijing for his first ride with the Apollo Auto hardware. He was on his way to the University of Tokio, where he is affiliated as a visiting professor and researcher. Wang Xue was a former colleague from his time at the Institute for Computer Technology (ICT) of the Chinese Academy of Science, where he served for the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft. She shows us how easy it is to use an autonomous navigating car as a taxi customer in May 2023. Have a look at the well describing videos! It was the first time in life for us ;-)

If you are interested in the Apollo.autos architecture and software, let <mailto:president at geoit.org?subject=&body=> me know. There are not many open-source industrial insights in this exciting new market like e.g. <https://geoit.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=90605b4f0f2ed7aa46a3527b9&id=d29b134f59&e=4c093b679e> autoware.org. <https://geoit.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=90605b4f0f2ed7aa46a3527b9&id=66edc42240&e=4c093b679e> We have also an introduction to Apollo which helps to find the next step with many architectural graphics.
It is time to change priorities to automomous navigation. Otherwise, it happens without us and we lose this domain with jobs and more.
