Prosodic phrasing in Catalan and Spanish spontaneous speech
Dr. Ariadna Benet
Universität Osnabrück
The aim of this thesis is to analyze and describe how the prosodic
phrasing is manifested in
Catalan and Spanish spontaneous speech, since the existing works are
only based on read or
lab speech (Estebas-Vilaplana & Maidment 1999, Astruc 2005, D’Imperio et
al. 2005, Prieto
2005 and 2006, Frota et al. 2007, Feldhausen 2008). The general
hypothesis is that differences
between the results based on both kinds of data, read and spontaneous
speech, will be found,
both as for boundary cues, as well as for the relation between the
boundary distribution and
the syntactic grouping. The corpus is set up by 20 interviews to 21 to
56-year-old adults, 10
Catalan speakers from Barcelona and 10 Spanish speakers from Madrid. In
order to analyse
the prosodic phrasing of this speech, the study establishes the criteria
for the boundary cues, a
set of prosodic phenomena that will determine the presence of a prosodic
boundary. These
criteria can be useful for further studies. The data are also observed
from the perception of 5
native speakers per language. The production results confirm the
hypothesis, since differences
between the realization of the boundary cues in spontaneous speech and
that in read speech
are found. One of the most prominent findings is the different pragmatic
meaning that convey
the continuation rise and the sustained pitch contours in spontaneous
speech, not only a
phonetic one like that found from lab speech (Frota et al. 2007). The
perception analysis
shows that differences from read speech are also related to boundary
distribution. The study
finds out also a difference between the data of both languages: Spanish
shows more
variability than Catalan with respect to boundary tones.
