Dear Colleagues:

The National Conference of the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the
United States (SEAMUS), "Intersections in Sound," will be held April 4-6,
2002 at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. In concerts and research
sessions, intersections between aesthetic approaches, compositional media,
historical and developing technologies, and electro-acoustic composition
and performance will be explored. The conference chair is Lawrence Fritts,
Director of the Electronic Music Studios at the University of Iowa.

Pioneering electronic instrument designer Don Buchla is this year's
recipient of the SEAMUS Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr. Buchla will discuss
his recent research and will perform in a concert featuring early and
recent works on original instruments and new controllers.

The guest composer for the conference is Denis Smalley. He will present his
work Base Metals and will participate in a panel discussion comparing
recent aesthetics and approaches to electro-acoustic composition between
European and American composers.

Last year's ASCAP/SEAMUS Student Commission Competition winners Kristi
McGarity and Suk-Jun Kim will premiere their commissioned works during the
conference. The music of current finalists Konstantinos Karathanasis, Luis
Maurette, Tae Hong Park, and Noel R. Paul will also be presented as part of
this year's competition.

12 concerts of electro-acoustic works for tape, live electronics, video,
instruments, voice, and dance will be presented on 16-channel surround
sound systems. Featured ensembles include the Center for New Music and the
University Symphony Orchestra. 12 Paper, Panel, and Curated Presentation
sessions will be held on a range of topics in electro-acoustic composition,
research, and performance.
